Empowering Small Scale Businesses through the positive power of business
Empowering small scale non-formal ventures in Western Kenya is an essential factor in the development of livelihoods. This is because it creates a better understanding of the business environment and a significant sharpening of the business skills of various business persons within the community. Our focus on non-formal ventures is designed to improve the number of businesses joining the active economy in building sustainable livelihoods and contributing positively to the development of the country. The program works through workshops, mentorships, and business competitions that are designed to promote, enhance, and strengthen the capacity of small scale non-formal ventures into semi-formal and formal businesses with the capacity to develop their own potential for sustainable growth. The workshops are geared towards comprehensive five day training in the understanding of technical and non-technical aspects of running semi-formal and formal businesses combined with a three month period of mentoring these businesses/business persons and promoting their work. The training concludes with a one day networking and award conference at Kisumu City for the beneficiaries of the program. We are promoting this platform on the understanding that it is the small scale business persons who contribute to the livelihoods of rural communities in this country. Empowering this group not enhances the capacity of rural communities to build strong and self-sustaining community enterprises. It is noteworthy that 70% of the businesses impacted by this process are women-led and are primarily aimed at enhancing the ability of households to grow exponentially. Our goal is to provide a pivot point for building the capacity of 1520 businesses to move from non-formal to semi-formal and formal status within 5 years beginning 2019.
